My Culture, My Heritage

My Culture, My Heritage is a project targeted at young people aged between 14 -19 that will examine what is meant by the terms ‘culture’ and ‘heritage’ through a series of dialogues and visits to organisations. The journey of the young people involved will be documented via video diaries and they will also get the chance to develop basic filming and editing techniques.

The project will be in collaboration with Embrace in the Community, AYDA Media and is funded by Lottery Heritage Fund. It is an exciting and interesting project that will explore the concepts of ‘culture’ and ‘heritage’ from young peoples’ perspective.

The project is now in full swing and going extremely well, we have visited numerous places of interest in and around Nottingham. We were able to take full advantage of when the children were on their summer holiday as we held many different workshops and took them to a few places of interest such as Nottingham Archives and let young people lead interviews with the public in Nottingham about their culture and heritage. We have carried out some field research by asking young people about their culture and heritage and what they actually know about it and surprisingly many young people do not know their own heritage.

Throughout Black History Month we held many workshops and discussions, we visited the African Carribean Market and a exhibiton on Duel Heritage more information of these events can be found in the news and events section.

In the next few weeks we are planning to make the most of any other cultural events that are to be held around Nottingham such as a visit to the New Art Exchange. We hope to travel to London also and visit the British Museum, whilst in London we are going to met up with a diverse group of young people from across London, with the help of “Hope in the Cities”. Many individuals and organisations have being making enquiries about getting involved with this project, so if you feel that you would be interested in being involved in this exciting project, feel free to contact us.
